Camps capacities are constantly insufficient
Last week our team had a regular visit to informal squats in Sombor. Next to the refugee camp there is again a great number of tents, predominantly set up by people from Syria. The number of people residing outside the camp is well over 200 and the camp capacities are highly over-exceeded. Moreover, people that manage to enter it do not have their basic human needs met - they don’t have three meals per day, they are not getting familiar with their rights and status in the Serbian legal system, and the hygiene in the facility is very poor.
Having in mind that this is a standard situation that we record in our regular visits all over border areas, we emphasize again that the duties of our state authorities, especially the Commissariat for refugees and migration is to extend the capacities of the existing camps, to open new ones, and to improve food, health and hygiene services in camps. Furthermore, it is of crucial importance to efficiently educate the refugees on their rights and obligations on the territory of Serbia. This is all highly needed since, in the first place, camps and the Commissariat exist to take care of these people in need.
