TO THE WORLD

KlikAktiv – Center for Development of Social Policies is fundraising for the continuation of the project which aims to provide assistance to people on the move while staying in Serbia. We need your help so we can continue our work!

KlikAktiv conducts an independent project with the aim to provide legal and social assistance to people on the move but also to monitor the respect of human rights and international and national legislation regarding the right to asylum. The situation on the ground and communication with people on the move shows us there is a big need for such services which is why we are currently fundraising for the continuation of our activities.

We want to reach to those that are underserved and that don’t have access to services provided by local and international NGOs. This is why we are focusing on people who are sleeping rough in different squats across Serbia or in camps in which there is a limited number of services available. Although the focus would be on these groups of people, Klikaktiv responds and provides assistance to others groups, both refugees and local nationals from vulnerable groups, whenever needed.

Our focus is placed in providing assistance in parks and other squats in Belgrade which are usually first points for newly arrivals in Serbia but it is also a place where a lot of people return to if they don’t manage to cross EU borders or to get accommodation in one of the Serbian camps. Belgrade’s parks (especially the one in front of the Faculty of Economics) is also a place where refugees who are accommodated in camps Kranjaca and Obrenovac gather during the day in search for information and services.

We also focus our work on the weekly outreach and field visits in order to reach to those people who are staying outside of Belgrade, especially in informal squats at the border area. We are currently visiting more than 20 different squats on the north of the country. Some of these squats host up to 250 people at the time. Klikaktiv follows developments of the Serbian policies towards the refugees and adjusts its work accordingly.

Providing people with legal information about their status, their rights and obligations while residing in Serbia will continue to be our priority. Besides the immediate and urgent care and legal information through the outreach work, we also assist people on the move for the long term since most of them are staying in Serbia for months and some even years. This includes legal representation in asylum procedure – assisting them in registration with the police, preparing them for asylum interviews and, if necessary, submitting appeals/lawsuits in case of a negative decision. We should clarify that in Serbian asylum procedure the lawyer is present during both asylum interviews and is allowed to ask additional questions as well as to interfere during the interview. Preparation for these interviews has to be covered both from the legal and social side, especially having in mind that the beneficiaries have to relive all the trauma and prosecution they experienced in their country of origin. KlikAktiv will continue its work in the field of strategic litigation. Our priority is securing the citizenship for all recognized refugees in Serbia. We were contacted by other refugees whose 5-year refugee status will expire during 2020 and who also want to apply for a Serbian citizenship.

Also, many refugees don’t have access to social services in Serbia and we want to fill in this gap. Many of our beneficiaries are unaccompanied minors, who are not placed under a guardianship and they do not have access to basic services such as accommodation, education or health care. Also, since beginning of 2022 we are seeing increased number of families and single women who are also forced to stay in informal settlements and squats alongside the border area.

Finally, we believe in transparency so our work and our findings are presented through regular reports and stories from the field in Journal section on our website.
