Public Statement regarding the New Pact on Migration and Asylum

On the 8th of October, the European interior ministers met to discuss the »New Pact on Migration and Asylum«, proposed by the European Commission on September 23rd.

Serbia is in the process of joining the EU, existing asylum legislation is being adapted to European guidelines. In concrete terms, this means that deportation policies are being intensified and humanitarian and human rights standards are being ignored.

We demand: Europe needs long-term and human rights-based solutions in its migration and asylum policy. The Balkan states must not continue to be the outposts of EU isolationist policies.

A group of organizations published a public statement on the current situation in the Balkans and Serbia and called for relevant EU authorities to protect people on the move, instead of continuing with externalization policies.
